Erickson came to St. Louis from Guatemala to be treated for severe scoliosis and a rare congenital anomaly that split one of his arms into two, giving the appearance that he had three arms.

Erickson's mom used to massage his legs for hours in the middle of the night to try and ease the pain that resulted from her son's spinal problems. His legs were becoming weaker, she was fearful of the ridicule he would receive because of his arms, and she was becoming more and more discouraged as she could find no one in Guatemala to help her son.
