Karar

Karar weighed less than ten pounds when he first arrived in St. Louis.

He stole the hearts of all who met him during his 10-month stay in St. Louis. This now bright and busy toddler flew across the ocean barely alive to obtain the medical care unavailable to him in his war-torn country of Iraq. Nearly all of Karar's intestines had worked their way outside his body through a colostomy opening he had received when he was seven days old. When he arrived in St. Louis, he weighed less than ten pounds as his body was no longer absorbing any nutrients. Karar underwent intense treatment to bring him safely out of a life-threatening state of malnutrition, and then underwent several procedures to correct his bowel problems. People of all faiths, color and ethnicity came together to nurture and support Karar and his mother, Lubna, during their medical stay and treatment at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center. The pictures say it all - truly a life-saving story - and a mother and child we will never forget.
