In the U.S. we are fortunate to have many health care resources available. Still, children often fall through the cracks and are unable to secure the medical or dental care they need. They may be ineligible for insurance or government programs. Or, perhaps, a long-term or serious illness has depleted a family's finances.
Healing the Children Missouri has developed its Missouri Kids Program over the past several years with an emphasis on providing help to kids in need of dental health treatment. To this end, we have provided funds to several teenagers whose orthodontic needs far exceeded their families' ability to pay.
Additionally, we have entered into a partnership with a local health center's dental department to assist children whose parents are unable to pay even a nominal family share of treatment fees. These children are uninsured and do not qualify for state programs. Since the summer of 2008, more than 90 children representing 75 families have received preventive care, extractions, fillings or treatment for abscesses.
Healing the Children's Missouri Kids Program remains open to providing modest help to families who need assistance beyond dental needs for their children. Each decision is made on a case by case basis and is contingent upon funds available in the Missouri Kids' limited yearly budget.
Examples of other types of medical needs funded locally are:
- Monthly prescription drugs
- Purchases of braces, wheelchairs, hearing aids or other medical equipment
- Medically-related travel costs
